You see, no matter whether your company tries to sell DVDs or Downloads, industry people will always find themselves on one side or the other of the debate as to whether the ambiance, mood, and presentation — or the sexual act itself — represents the most important part of the entertainment the adult industry provides. You wouldn’t be able to find anyone in the business that considers physically turning people on not important, but you will absolutely find staunch argument about how one should go about doing that.
Fortunately for us all, you never really need to cast a vote anywhere on the issue. You “acquire” the material that most fits the needs in your life at the moment, and you let someone else worry about defending ultimately meaningless positions. It takes all kinds to make a world, and one need only wander the aisles of a porn convention to have that pointed out rather dramatically. Some night while enjoying the after-effects of the post coital condition, though, feel free to lie back and think, “Gee. Somewhere people are actually arguing about the best way to record a blow job, or whether heterosexual women have any place in the XXX industry.” … If nothing else, that’ll bring another smile to your face.
In practical terms the “full of production value” (big, and often artsy) movies cost more to produce, so they tend to be more rare than the “Hey, I have a new phone so let’s record you masturbating” videos, but we have room in the market for each. Of course the AVN Awards do tend to be the one time of year they truly celebrate these types of shows, so we did want to throw out some kudos from those of us that do not actually associate gagging with sexy, nor do we think that blasting a scene with 10,000 watts of power for those gynecological closeups happens to be a good thing.
As with an artistic venture, of course, you will occasionally run across an effort that goes so far in a direction as to completely miss the purpose of the entertainment, however. Companies should not spend millions of dollars on Super Bowl commercials where although people may remember the spot, they cannot for the life of them tell you the product or service being advertised. Sitcoms should not devote entire episodes to funerals. Yet that still happens. “Don’t panic,” to borrow an admirable phrase.
Some people may not be clever enough to understand that The Princess Bride happens to be one of the best movies ever made. Some people might completely miss the value of having an amplifier that goes up to eleven. Heck, some people may have never even heard of Zaphod Beeblebrox. … Humans are weird. … But the world has room for us all.
