Directors take a lot of latitude with any kind of movie. Those attempting a parody in theory have a little tighter framework within which to work, though, seeing as how the original show(s) released long ago, presumably with some success or else the whole reason behind a parody sort of fails before it begins. That said, in the adult world directors have to make concessions to accuracy for very different reasons than those helming mainstream movies, since in regular movies stars can generally just pretend to like each other if they must. Sometimes a lack of intimacy can make things easier. Go figure. Sometimes a director will even drop in a sequence from an entirely different franchise in our world, for example.
