Chantelle Fox

Very High Rollers

When we were back on the ground, clever architects had us exit through the gift shop. Ms. Fox looked for a cap designed to camouflage some flaw that she sees and no one else is aware of. It reinforces a suspicion that I had long held, that young Cindy Crawford used to look into the mirror and think, “I would be kind of cute if I did not have that thing on my lip.” [Wait! Cindy Crawford has a thing on her lip?]

Built to be the focus of a shopping and dining area called the Linq, planners intended The High Roller to draw traffic to the “opposite” end of the Strip. [We cannot say with certainty whether or not this strategy has paid off, but we do feel confident theorizing that Chantelle did manage to stop whatever traffic was nearby.]

Remember, we had decided against coffee before boarding the Wheel, but since I had promised Chantelle we would get some afterwards, we ended up walking almost the entire length of the Strip to find a Starbucks. (Lucky, it is an open air mall, and for her I walked outside.) [Gee. Imagine.] This made me think of the beginnings of a joke: Two Brits and a Yank go into Starbucks. They order coffee and I have tea. Although I am sure they consider ice tea to be an abomination. [If they have Starbucks in England, do they have to call them Starpounds?]

Also on my assignment, Lucky had asked me to take Mav and Chantelle to the most American-themed casino on the strip, the New York New York. [Well, the Hustler Club would have truly been the most American-themed, but it’s pretty far from the Strip. And we did hate for Chantelle’s only experience in America to be Las Vegas. She lives in the United Kingdom. She can go see Paris or Venice any time she wants.] To take them there I violated another dearly held tradition among locals and drove down the strip passing many examples of what critics would consider tacky architecture. [She got Lon to walk outside AND drive on the Strip? Golly, he was in love.] As I turned the corner to enter NY NY, Chantelle’s eye was caught by the Excalibur. I guess we wrongly believe that Europeans think of castles as boring old tourist traps.

NY NY has a Statue of Liberty in front, the Brooklyn Bridge on the side, and a taxicab themed roller-coaster going through the building. The décor is 1930’s Gotham, absolutely nothing like the Riviera. [Well, after some of the spectacular views, that last photo looks like an indication that they could maybe have used some time on the ground. Since the photos were all a combination of those taken by Lon, Maverick, and Chantelle, we cannot say for sure, but one of them certainly looked a little dizzy.]
