Just last week a mass email to “friends” came in from a long-time and historically very successful director in the business. This person announced “retirement” from the industry, and went on to provide a lengthy list as to the reasons behind the decision. According to this admittedly dejected person, the companies that even commit to shooting “larger” movies these days – for our purposes defined as those that at least attempt something along the lines of a serious plot, transpiring among characters that don’t find themselves as of yet naked – have a sufficient stable of “contract” directors to handle what little work remains. The stars today find themselves working for as little as 20% of what top talent did just ten years ago. We’ve even heard tell of people that will show up on a set on which they’re not even scheduled to work, simply hoping that someone doesn’t show up and they can fill in. Granted, this remains a relatively fun job, and most of us wouldn’t do that in our chosen profession no matter how dire the circumstances, but you can see the issue.

This kind of financial pressure leads to women making questionable choices at best. In addition to the expected “wilder and wilder” activities for less and less money, at least according to this director the vast majority of them now actually earn their living with “privates” – a term you can probably figure out the meaning of without much explanation.

The major companies find themselves scrambling to do whatever they can to distinguish themselves from the pack, and not incidentally from the “available for free” porn on the Internet. In this vein we found ourselves on the set of an honest-to-goodness 3D sex movie shoot a couple of weeks ago, and it happened to have one of Tiger Woods’ admitted “privates” in the cast. Odd how things turn out.
