The posts about Tenaya over the summer and fall seem to have stirred up an unusual amount of interest in the young lady, even for our site, which tends to have active memberships. True, she was the “Summer 2009” Penthouse Pet and that certainly falls into the impressive category, but we know a lot of Pets, and so hearing about them here doesn’t raise that many eyebrows in the grand spectrum.

Apparently our unabashed ranting about the poor level of managerial options that people wanting to break into the adult industry currently face has caused a bit an uproar. Sometimes I forget that quite a few industry professionals follow the members’ side here, and many of those happen to be in the business I admittedly insulted recently. For the record, I stand by the characterizations we made, completely and incontrovertibly, but I will allow that a notable difference exists between an “agent” and a “manager” – even though prospective talent almost certainly would neither draw, nor understand the distinction.

The Premise

From the earliest days of my tenure in this business, I’ve explained the philosophy behind the approach very simply: “I’m just selling shoes. I’m selling very pretty shoes, but I’m just selling shoes.” As odd as it may seem, like any entrepreneurial venture, sound business principles applied to the process will more often than not lead to relative success in the field. Although lacking the sexiness one might expect (or prefer) in the pursuit of an adult movie career, performers would be happier overall if they’d understand the boring economics behind their chosen profession. More to the point today, if the people allegedly enlisted to help these people understood the issue, we might have a lot more talented people in the talent pool.

Sexual Evolution exists as a definitively cultural — and perhaps even personal — term. It should come as no surprise that not much time passes for women in the adult movie business before they rather unconsciously adopt very atypical attitudes toward sexual encounters in general. Depending upon one’s vantage point, that may be a “liberal” leaning, or if you grew up in an older generation, perhaps the term “easy” might make more sense. Actually if you really want to be technical about it, no woman ever considers making porn for money without long ago having jumped into the Easy Pool, but you can see the point here.

Remember the old joke about the difference between a whore and a slut? … That’s the sort of fine line drawing trap that you can fall into if you look at these performers with an overly “macro” view. On the more pure individualistic scale, you can safely assume that nobody that has sex for money thinks about sex the same way as anyone who doesn’t. That seems simple, but if you set this liberal standard as the starting line, a significant path still exists for the race to continue along.
