We find it helpful to attempt continuity in one’s life, forsaking the peaks and valleys to the extent possible, in favor of a more consistent and predictable emotional path. Granted, we all have an annoying tendency to fall in love, which screws with that plan absolutely, but outside of that, you can make an effort.
